Reader’s discussions

In the nearest several months at the invitation of the local social society organizations, educational institutions and museums, V. Lypyns’kyj Socio-Humanitarian Research Centre and the publishing house “Tempora” with involvement of the leading Ukrainian researchers will organize a series of events covering the discussion of the two-volume book “Hetman”, public reflections on the book and anniversaries of 2008/2009.

At the same time the discussion on the topic: “From Ivan Mazepa to Pylyp Orlyk: issues of the legal heritage” dedicated to 300-years anniversary of 1710 Constitution.
The first scientific seminar will be held on 24 February 2010 in Odessa in the premise of the Historical Department of I. Mechnikov Odessa National University at 14.00 (lecture room 9).
All people who are not indifferent and interested are welcome.

The Identity of the Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa and the Appropriation of His Legacy by the russians

We present to your attention an interesting project created by a team of scientists, journalists and public activists. In the descriptions of the video, the authors noted: «In the second episode of the documentary narrative podcast 'Why Do They Steal?,' we explore the legacy of the Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa. We delve into the ongoing lack of understanding of the significance of this historical figure. This episode investigates the russian aversion to anything associated with Mazepa while harboring a desire to appropriate the Hetman’s legacy. For instance, the Lev (Lion) cannon, rushed by the russians to become a symbol of their empire, was left uncharged. Or consider the Pigeon Bell, awkwardly rescued and subsequently mishandled, leading to its ultimate breakage. Moreover, we examine why, even after 300 years, the russians can’t get over Mazepa. The material was prepared with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation. Summary of Archaeological and Historical Research of Baturyn in 2021

This illustrated article by archaeologists Dr. Volodymyr Mezentsev (Canada) and Yurii Sytyi (Ukraine) surveys the results of the 2021 excavations in Baturyn, Ukraine. It also examines the princely coat of arms of Ivan Mazepa depicted on the stove tiles discovered at the site of the ruined residence of Pylyp Orlyk, on the 19th-century German engraving, and the hetman’s seal, 1707-08, in a comparative analysis. The first shorter version of this article was published in the bulletin Canadio-Byzantina, No. 33, University of Ottawa, January 2022, pp. 15-22.
