To celebrate — or “to get caught in”?

The forthcoming “round” historical dates are the good occasion to think over our attitude toward own history. Especially, when it concerns the events, which result in controversial judgements and even public indignations since long time. Such “nervous” dates comprise 300-years anniversary of the Ukrainian-Swedish union made by the hetman I. Mazepa and the king of Sweden Charles (Karl) XII, as well as 300-years date of Poltava battle. Це про них ідеться в статті Кирила Галушка «Святкування» чи «відзначення», або доки триватиме для українців Полтавська битва” («День», 23 червня ц. р.), яка якраз і спонукала мене взятися за перо. Тим паче, що незадовго до її появи на сторінках видання мені також — як і К. Галушку — випало побувати в тих місцях, де колись у ратних поєдинках випробовували свою долю Карл ХII, Петро I та Іван Мазепа, і отримати чималу «дозу» вражень від побаченого й почутого.

The Identity of the Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa and the Appropriation of His Legacy by the russians

We present to your attention an interesting project created by a team of scientists, journalists and public activists. In the descriptions of the video, the authors noted: «In the second episode of the documentary narrative podcast 'Why Do They Steal?,' we explore the legacy of the Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa. We delve into the ongoing lack of understanding of the significance of this historical figure. This episode investigates the russian aversion to anything associated with Mazepa while harboring a desire to appropriate the Hetman’s legacy. For instance, the Lev (Lion) cannon, rushed by the russians to become a symbol of their empire, was left uncharged. Or consider the Pigeon Bell, awkwardly rescued and subsequently mishandled, leading to its ultimate breakage. Moreover, we examine why, even after 300 years, the russians can’t get over Mazepa. The material was prepared with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation. Summary of Archaeological and Historical Research of Baturyn in 2021

This illustrated article by archaeologists Dr. Volodymyr Mezentsev (Canada) and Yurii Sytyi (Ukraine) surveys the results of the 2021 excavations in Baturyn, Ukraine. It also examines the princely coat of arms of Ivan Mazepa depicted on the stove tiles discovered at the site of the ruined residence of Pylyp Orlyk, on the 19th-century German engraving, and the hetman’s seal, 1707-08, in a comparative analysis. The first shorter version of this article was published in the bulletin Canadio-Byzantina, No. 33, University of Ottawa, January 2022, pp. 15-22.
