Ivan Stepanovych Mazepa
The figure of Ivan Mazepa is one of most enigmatic in the Ukrainian history. The discussion, polemic concerning an assessment of his actions and deeds is still lasting in the scientific and popular literature. The reason is the great scale of this person who can be hardly apprehended, placed within the certain frameworks of clearness and comprehension. The hetman was loved and hated, respected and feared, appreciated and bewared, glorified and slandered as in the days of his governance, and later in the next decades and centuries.
Іванові Мазепі не вдалося здійснити потаємну мрію свого життя — створення незалежної української держави. Але те, що він як патріот «для общаго добра матки моей Отчизны бідной Украины» наважився не закрити, а поставити це питання з відповідною гостротою для наступних поколінь, є найголовнішим його скарбом-заповітом нащадкам.
